The immediate occasion for writing this commentary is a series of sermons and lessons about life in the Spirit we are doing in our local church. Of course, much of what I write here I will not say there, and vice versa. But I hope this commentary works as a supplement to those talks. Personally, writing this will help me find the right words; if this helps anyone else, all the better.
I intend the commentary to be interpenetratingly theological, exegetical, and pastoral. Following Richard Hays, et. al., I stand convinced a good reading of the Scripture is done in the light of Jesus’ death and resurrection and for the benefit of Jesus’ followers, the church. Historical and critical exegesis serves the pastoral task, which is inherently theological.
I will add to the bibliography as I go.
